Often when a hospice patient dies, the loved ones will often call and ask for a visit, "just to make sure they are really gone." I have never gone to one of these visits and had the patient still be alive. People intuitively know what death looks like whether they have ever seen a dead person up close before in their lives.
The first sign is that they are no longer breathing. Breathing out is called expiration. Breathing in is called inspiration. This made me think about death being a part of our daily lives, even our breathing since we "expire" about 16 times a minute on average. The last breath in this life is an expiration.
It takes muscle involvement to breath in and hold the breath momentarily before getting ready to expire (breathe out). Breathing in is like holding on and breathing out is like letting go. Expiration is a letting go process. Expiration is a part of this process we call life. We do it all the time in so many ways.
